Rep. Cook selected as GOP caucus nominee for Texas House Speaker

Texas House Republicans selected their pick for the next Texas Speaker of the House Saturday. As of 5:15 p.m., Rep. David Cook was selected as the GOP Caucus nominee.

This decision was made just one day after incumbent Speaker Dade Phelan announced he would be stepping out of the race and not be running for a third term.

In a statement on Friday, the Texas House Democratic Caucus said, “Nothing has changed for Texas House Democrats… For any Speaker candidate interested in serving the House, the Democratic Caucus is available to listen, and hear their plans to finally give Texans a legislative session that puts people over politics.”

Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield, was previously determined as the most direct challenger and was previously selected by a group of Republicans as their challenge to Phelan.

The Texas House Republican Caucus voted for their pick for leadership in a closed-door meeting on Saturday hours after the meeting began at 11 a.m.
